Joanne Probyn is a contemporary abstract painter also known for her hand embroidery. Her work communicates with the intimacy of a personal journal with a focus on social issues. Themes of unity and growth continue throughout her new body of work. Joanne’s move to Eastside Atelier has allowed her to expand the size of her work to meet her vision. In her new body of work, Reimagining Balance, elements depict new understandings of time and individual space. Fragmentation within the works speaks to multiple perspectives and inclusivity while encouraging the gaze to travel across the painting. Joanne also invites the viewer to enjoy the potentials of movement and change. Her paintings spin, bend, whirl, soar and dance. Joanne’s art is informed by her music and dance practices, as well as relocations and personal change. Her paintings reference expressionism and are designed to evoke an emotional response. Joanne comes from a long line of creative women including her great grandmother who made bobbin lace. Two of her new embroidery works are featured in a new art book published by Jen Tough Gallery, New Mexico. Her fibre pieces offer a meditative space for pause and wonder. Nature is both a metaphor and a safe-haven. Many works are expressive and uplifting. Some pieces are intuitive while others are researched, sketched and use technology touchpoints. Joanne often works on multiple works at once with a strong focus on one. She completed her design and illustration education at Capilano University and her marketing management certificate at UBC Sauder. Joanne is currently featured in two Jen Tough Gallery Artist Alliance exhibitions and the Eastside Culture Crawl Preview Show, Surfacing at The Cultch.
