Artist Statement/Bio
A new artist but not new to creative work, Laura was a writer for most of her career and has self-published two novels: Polly Wants to Be a Writer (2013) and The Naked Storyteller (2014). Supplementing her writing skills, she now paints portraits with acrylics on canvas. She is a realist and must have a story to go along with each piece. Laura enjoys sitting with her subjects for up to 70 hours as it’s how she eventually discovers the “why” behind the “what.” Her process begins with having a really good reason to paint someone and then doing a photoshoot and preliminary sketches. She also gets inspiration from current events. She is working on a book project—The Golden Age of America—in which she is documenting in art and essay some of the strangest events since Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2025.
