Artist Statement/ Biography:

Jai Sallay-Carrington is a queer and transgender Canadian ceramic sculptor who earned their MFA at the University of Washington in 2023. They have traveled around Europe, North America and China to install exhibitions, attend artist residencies and teach workshops. Their passion for uplifting the 2SLGBTQ+ community fuels their passion to create art that asks the hard questions and strengthens community.

Jai’s ceramic sculptures instigate questions about human identities, behaviour and emotions using anthropomorphic creatures. They question the role that gender, sexuality and desire have in forming an individual’s character. Jai’s sculptures speak to a feeling of otherness, not through visible physical traits, but through the hidden aspects of identity. These identities exist within, they are either shared or kept a secret. As each animal comes with physical qualities, myths and stories associated with them, their zoomorphic addition to the human form creates a deeper understanding of that individual’s personality and experiences.
